Desert Dreaming

Crawling branches and brambles of Joshua Tree National Park

I cannot believe it’s Friday already – it feels like the week only began yesterday and that mere hours ago my love and I were driving through the prickly desert of Joshua Tree eagerly anticipating the move into our new place. Joshua Tree was such an amazing expanse of clay-and-cumin-colored earth, but as we traveled through the national park with nothing but hilly desert and dry brush on either side of us I couldn’t bring myself to think of anything other than unpacking blenders and blow dryers…

It is so funny how sometimes our minds wander away from the moment even when our surroundings are so beautiful, but I guess I shouldn’t give myself too much of a hard time for this considering the major life events my subconscious was anticipating. This move to California is a huge one, after all, and the even huger milestone of marriage is less than two months away. For this reason, I’m tempted to make a pact with myself to be more present over the coming days as I unpack and make Los Angeles my home, but another part of me has already surrendered to how useless this pact would be and is eagerly awaiting the bizarre places my mind will wander while scrubbing down kitchen cabinets. This is all to say, taking a break from work and engaging in life tasks is often when inspiration strikes for me, and I’m interested to see what a little change in pace will help my mind cook up…Do you also find that inspiration is what happens in your brain when your body is busy doing other things? Whether you’re toiling away at menial tasks like me or enjoying lovely June weather, I hope you have a smashing Saturday and Sunday!

That landscape is incredible – would love to drive through there someday.

Just discovered your blog, and would love it if you popped by mine sometime.

Joshua tree is such a lovely name for a place. I find myself distracted by my phone, email and internet a lot of the times so I like to take a whole day off from them every week just to remind myself that I can live without them just fine. xoxoxoxo

Your idea of spending one day free from technology each week is brilliant, Shin! It is so hard to tear ourselves away form constant communication and connectivity, but it must be well worth it. I think I’m going to try this next weekend. Thanks so much for sharing!
